Volunteers from Tails High, who had already rescued several cats from the same location, were quick to respond when they heard about the pair. They knew immediately that this mother and her kitten deserved a fresh chance at life. Determined to rewrite their story, the rescue team stepped in without hesitation.

“We thought they looked like a pair you would read about in a children’s storybook,” Tails High shared. Inspired by this, they named the mom Storybook and the kitten Fable. Both were malnourished, covered in fleas, and struggling. Storybook’s fur was thin and patchy, while Fable was weak and anemic. Despite this, their bond and will to live remained unbreakable.

In foster care, they finally had safety and warmth. Storybook began regaining her strength and her fur started growing back. Fable rediscovered her appetite and quickly turned into a playful, lively kitten. Jennifer, their long-term foster, admired their resilience: “Fable is a determined little soul. She had a rough start, but her spirit says ‘I can do anything.’”

Storybook proved to be a loving lap cat who never wanted to be far from people. Her sweet, calm personality shone through, while Fable followed in her footsteps, becoming a cuddle bug herself. Fable blossomed into an energetic kitten, chasing toys, pouncing fearlessly, and sometimes preferring playtime over meals.

Meanwhile, Storybook’s coat continued to heal, filling in with soft fur. She enjoyed bird watching, playing with toys—especially wand toys—and basking in the sunshine by the window. Fable adored grooming sessions from her mom, followed by naps curled up at her side. Her curiosity about the world beyond the kitten room grew stronger every day, strutting through the house as though she owned it.
